Noticing When Something’s Not Ok
Statistics tell us that many women in your workplace may be experiencing intimate partner violence, participating in this campaign ensures that your colleagues know their workplace is a safe space, and help is available.
Abusive partners often target the place of employment because it represents independence and connection. Employers and co-workers are often the first to notice changes in performance, attendance, or behaviour. Recognizing these signs—and having clear policies in place—can be the first step toward supporting someone and responding safely.
Signs to look for:
Frequent disruptions
Excessive personal calls, unexpected visits, or missing work may signal that a partner is monitoring or interfering with their day.
Visible distress
Arriving late, appearing shaken, or showing signs of conflict before work can indicate ongoing tension or abuse at home.
Damaged work or belongings
When a partner sabotages items needed for work—or harasses co-workers directly—it can put both employment and safety at risk.
Isolation from colleagues
An employee may be pressured to quit, withdraw from social interactions, or avoid workplace events, limiting their independence and support network.
Harassment at the workplace
If a partner is stalking near the office or contacting staff, it is a serious red flag that safety and boundaries are being violated.
Tip: Create a workplace procedure on intimate partner violence disclosures and responses and incorporate these into existing workplace violence and harassment policies. Appoint someone to your health and safety committee who has specialized training in Intimate Partner Violence so they can support your whole team.
